You Tube: Buck Attacks Dead Buck!

David sent me this link and asked what I thought of it.

First, I’ve seen a lot of live turkeys attack dead gobblers on the ground, but I have never seen a buck do it. I attribute it to the craziness of the rut—testosterone-addled bucks do weird and unexplainable things. This attacking buck is also an especially aggressive young deer (I believe bucks have “personalities” like people do; some are bold and aggressive, others more passive).

Second, those guys took the encounter way too flippantly. This was not a joking matter. At any minute that wild and rut-crazed buck could have pounced and attacked with lowered rack and flailing hooves. As fired-up as that deer was, it could have been bloody or even fatal.

I believe the right thing to do in that situation would have been to back off, hide behind trees and watch and enjoy the show…the attacker would have eventually gotten bored and walked off, as he eventually did, with not much damage to the dead buck.

What would you have done?

This video is all over the internets now and is most likely a Photoshopped fake. There are so many clues pointing that way. Where is the snow on the ground when the fight takes place? When the buck was shot there was snow on the ground. And where is the house when the buck was shot? I do not believe this is a real video.

Martin, I don't know a whole lot about video editing...but I know that editing 30fps for 5 minutes flawlessly would have been nearly impossible. So, when you say "fake", what do you mean? Clearly there's a living deer fighting a dead deer.

I'll choose to believe it, because it's an incredible show of nature being unique and shocking.

I agree with Mike that it could have gotten dangerous real quick...especially after the first time the buck looks up and stares at the guys. On the other hand, I'm pretty sure in the moment I would have done the same thing: so shocked I'd just stand there in misbelief!!!

Like I said, where is the snow after the buck was shot? And where is the house before the buck was shot. Not trying to be a jerk here but I have learned that most everything on the internets is fake.

Couple things. Both really nice bucks. COngrats to the hunter for killing the one. THese guys are stupid though. I wouldn't have been anywhere near it once the deer started doing what he did. It happens. I shot a decent 8 this year and a much smaller buck did this exact thing before I could get out of my tree, i thought it was pretty neat to see.

The most important thing I have to say about this video though is DO NOT EVER SHOOT A RIFLE INTO THE AIR!!!!!!! the one guy kept saying s"shoot your gun up in the air, fire one off in the air, shoot up into the trees." Bullets can travel a very long way, and what goes up has to come down somewhere and you have no idea what it will come down on. If you ever need to shoot to scare something and don't want to kill it please please please shoot into the ground.
