Late-Season VA Buck

Mike, I have attached a picture of an eight pointer that I took on December 20th in Amherst County, Virginia with my .50 cal Knight muzzleloader. He stepped out of a thicket to feed in some red oaks right around 12:15. Just wanted to show that there still are some big ones out there late season! Best regards, Brad Carner

Love this VA buck and love Brad’s message. December and January hunting is tough, man, no matter where you hunt. Stick with it and hunt long and hard like Brad did if your season is still on. Brad shot his buck at 12:15, you would not have anticipated that in December, but ya never know.

Matt's Gravatar Cool looking buck, and incredible that it was shot at 12:15! Just when we think we have buck's patterned, they do something like that. Congrats

Dean Weimer's Gravatar Hoytboy said it best. Many bucks "pattern" hunters and know most are out during mid-day. I think, seeing that they're animals is that they really become
conditioned (think Pavlov's Dogs) to realize that much of their predators (esp. us?) tend to show up around the crepusbular periods and the deer adjust to over time. I've noticed the deer here this year seemed extra "nocturnal". Is it a result of conditioning to hunters? I don't know for sure. All I know is this trend started a week, or more BEFORE the gun season even started. In more northern climes deer, especially mature bucks tend to feed during the mid-day hours because it's the warmest part of the entire day; esp. when the mercury really dips.

At any rate, that is a great late season story/buck. Congrats to the young VA hunter!
