NRA Membership Booms by 250,000
From usnews.com: A day before President Barack Obama is scheduled to release Vice President Joe Biden's recommendations to curb gun violence in the United States, the National Rifle Association told U.S. News and World Report that they have seen membership grow by 250,000 in the month since the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Connecticut.
"I would say that every time President Obama opens his mouth and Sen. [Dianne] Feinstein opens her mouth and they talk about gun bans and restricting the rights of law abiding Americans, people pay attention to that and sign up," says Andrew Arulanandam, the NRA's public affairs director.
I worked for the NRA for a decade and am a Life Member. Are you a member? We need you now. Click here to join.
HOWEVER, I did recently join the organization because for the first time (since 1994), I believe we are seeing a real, credible threat to our right to bear arms. I just hope all of the "crying wolf" over the years doesn't cause gun owners to ignore this issue. Despite my reservations, I believe now is the time for action. Now is the time when gun owners need to join together in one, united voice. That voice must be the NRA.
There is no other organization with the power and support of the NRA. Sure, we can contact our legislators individually, but we must have someone to collectively speak for the 70-80 million gun owners in this country.
time was right to join again. The lib's are starting to say some scary things about us legal, law abiding gun owners. I hope they don't
want to push their luck to far and awaken a sleeping giant.
The only way to solve the 'gun problem' in their eyes is the eventual ban of all firearms. This NRA member believes that they won't stop until they have achieved that ultimate goal. We cannot give them any ground.
The reality is you can ban ARs and any mag over 10 rounds and it will change absolutely nothing. There are millions of ARs out there now, and tens of millions of high cap mags that will be able to be sold and re-sold over and over again.
It's like trying to close the barn door after the horse is out.
As far as background checks go....I have one done everytime I purchase a firearm @ my lgs. If it is required of private sales, I'll do that too.
But....let's take a look @ private sales. If a person owns a firearm manufactured before the date the legislation goes through, how can that law
be enforced? Tom could sell a gun to Harry and Harry could say it was sold before the law was passed. How would you know it was or wasn't?
It would be another toothless law that puts the burden on law abiding citizens, yet does nothing to stop these killings or illegal gun sales.
I would happily look @ new laws and possibly support them if I felt they would make a real difference.
At this point I've not see one good idea from either side that would make that difference.....nothing. It's just the same old stuff.
Supporting a ban on black guns is no different than supporting a ban on semi-auto shotguns, handguns, or bolt action rifles. What will you say when they come for all semi-auto guns? What will you say when they come for the bolt actions and over unders? And when you are desperately trying to protect your single shot T/C, and they decide that too needs to go, then what?
That's about like saying you support deer hunting but want a ban on hunting small game.
I went to a pretty rural high school with zero violence, and yet we had an armed SRO officer there full time. And that was almost 20 years ago.
The whole let's ban the black rifle as long as my hunting rifle or shotgun is left alone argument amazes me. And, I'm not a current NRA member or an owner of an AR.
childs school is astronomical. It might make YOU feel better, but in all honesty it likely would do what it did @ Columbine....nothing.
IMHO, we need to try an figure out what is leading young men to do these things. I read on article that stated many of these young men were
on meds for ADHD or depression. Does that have something to do with it? I don't know, but it seems to be worth looking @.
