Photo: Monster Texas Rattler!

Jim saw this photo somewhere, maybe Facebook, and sent it with the message:

Hanback, I know how you like snakes. Haven’t seen one on the blog for a while, check this out this beauty. What do you think? It’s from central Texas and said to be 10’ 4” long and 108 lbs.!

I think--no I know--I hate that thing. But at least it is dead. I do doubt those numbers: 10-feet?...100 pounds? But look at the size of that diamond head, that's no optical illlusion.

Any snake, garter to rattler, is too big and nasty for me. If I saw or heard that monster in the woods I’d be done. I’m not kidding, man, I’m mortified of those things. Aren’t you? comment

bbarnette's Gravatar Although that's certainly a big snake, I'll go first in calling BS on the numbers - no way it could be that length or weight! If it were from Texas it would have to be a Western Diamondback; a website from the Univ of Texas at Arlington sez the largest known Western Diamondback was 7.7 feet long. To me it looks more like an Eastern Diamondback, which are larger than Westerns, but still are only known to have reached about 8 ft in length.

Matt's Gravatar I love them actually. I'm heading down to SC to shoot (photograph) Pigmy Rattler's and Copperheads at the end of the week. There's something mesmerizing and beautiful about them. Anywho...

Yeah, those numbers are not possible, but it does still look like a beastly snake!

Brian in Noblesville's Gravatar I HATE SNAKES TOO! Got a few garter snake that like to call my neighbor's air conditioner, "home." I'm sorry, but if those little bastards even come close to the fence (which they like to hang out on until I come by with the weed-eater, or lawn mower), they are fair game! My neighbor says, "Ah, they keep the mice away." Of which I reply, "YEAH, SO DO MOUSE TRAPS!"

DANG, I don't know how some of you Southern Boyz do it with all these things out there hunting at the same time you are!

Rodger's Gravatar Ran over one that was over 6ft in the South Texas brush one time. Even with the head cut off (first order of business!) that snake took my arms and moved them around like I was a baby. Powerful.
I like 'em too Matt. Big powerful creatures that are seldom seen.

Henry Mitchel's Gravatar That thing is poisonous. With that large diamond shaped head, it probably stored large amount of venom. If I ever see that one, I would gonna be in less than a second run so fast. So spooled for that giant

Holliday's Gravatar This Diamondback came from SE Georgia. The guy in the pic is a good friend of mine from college at Georgia Southern. This exact pic appeared on the cover of GON
(Georgia Outdoor News) back in the summer of 2010. The specs on the snake were close to 8' and an estimated weight of 80 lbs.

Cincinnati carpet cleaning's Gravatar That's really a big snake. Isn't it venomous. Thanks for the share!
