Best Summer Job: Dart-Gunning Deer for a Tennessee Research Project

What did you do this summer? Austin had the coolest job I know of, and he sent this report:

Mike: As part of a team of research assistants for the University of Tennessee, we were hired to shoot (using dart guns) 10 does and 10 bucks on a WMA in south-central Tennessee this summer. The guns were loaded with darts containing the appropriate drug mixtures to immobilize the whitetails, and GPS transmitters were inserted into the animals to track them once hit.

The dart guns we used have a maximum range of about 30 yards, so essentially it was bowhunting with a 3-9 scope and badass!

Telemetry equipment was used to track the deer to their downed location. The animals were fitted with ear tags and GPS collars to track their movements. We monitored pulse oxygen rate, heart rate, respiratory rate and temperature, and took live weights and hair samples. The entire process for each deer averaged about an hour; we then administered a reversal drug to allow the deer to recover and leave the area under full control.

The research purpose is to track deer movement throughout the hunting seasons—specifically, to find out what types of cover the deer seek out, and to monitor how movement and pressure relate to vehicle strikes along highways in the area. GPS collars on each deer send off signals to a satellite, which are then sent to a computer to locate the animals’ exact coordinates. Collared deer can be hunted and shot at any point during the legal season; the results should be interesting to see where and to what extreme deer movement occurs from the result of hunting pressure.

BTW, the ages of the bucks we darted were 2½ years (five animals), 3½ (3) and 4½ (2). We saw one of the older bucks again later in the summer, and he is a solid P&Y 10-point, about 130”. –Thanks, Austin.

Great stuff, thanks Austin. comment

ian in wisconsin's Gravatar that is pretty freakn sweet beats unloading trucks and 3rd shift in the hospital like i worked all summer ! 16 days til bow season

Dean Weimer's Gravatar That would be a lot of fun to be a part of. The only problem for me would be that I'm extremely allergic to whitetails (dander, etc.). The buck in the photo looks to be a real dinger. I'd like to see what he looks like two and a half months later. Neat stuff.

Mack's Gravatar Neat to see how they can now track so much easier than when we had to triangulate them. Will add lots more data in a nuch shorter time. I know from experience you had a great time!

Rick's Gravatar Mike - cool job - yes. I have two thoughts troubling thoughts on this though. First, isn't there something a little disappointing about drawing your bow on the buck in that picture in two weeks or so, and seeing...two big yellow research ID tags in his ears? Second, the results of UT's study could provide some scary ammo for the antis out there. Think about what they've got their hands on if UT publishes a study that shows specifically that deer-auto collisions increase during hunting season? A bit scary. (Still a cool job though, no doubt!)

Bolt's Gravatar Damn, and to think, I used to like my job!!

hanback's Gravatar Rick, I actually think it would be pretty cool to kill a WILD buck like this with ear tag and GPS collar (not some pen-raised cow).
I saw where a guy killed a collared doe like that legally, he got her mounted with collar on, unique and neat!

hanback's Gravatar I just thought of something--if you were sitting a stand there and the buck in the picture walked by with yellow ear tags and a
collar would u shoot it, or be worried to shoot it because it looked tame or something? I can see where somebody would think that,
I hope and assume there are postings at the WMA that say collared tagged game is a-ok

Buckwheat's Gravatar The only thing scarier than the two yellow tags and collar would be if your name was etched in its hide...LOL

David in NC's Gravatar I had the same thought about the potential implications of the research. I still think it should be done, because we want to know the answers to those questions posed. However, I am sure that movement increases during the fall months (rut), when the pressure also happens to be the heaviest. There is no good way to separate these two occurrences in wild, hunted deer. But, a study that shows hunters are pressuring deer to the point that they run out in front of cars - well, that would not help. Sounds like a great research project.

Joe Large's Gravatar ANYONE COULD KILL THAT DEER WITH A GUN LIKE THAT, HERE IN PA THAT WOULD BE ILLEGAL TO HUNT WITH!!!

PEOPLE NEED TO UNDERSTAND THAT ITS NOT HARD TO KILL A DEER WITH A GUN LIKE THAT, I USE A SMOOTH BORE SHOTGUN WITH BEAD SIGHTS AND ILL TELL U ONE THING, IVE KILLED 5 BONNE AND CROKETS WITH THAT GUN AND IM DAMN PROUD OF MAKING A 110 YARD SHOT WITH A RIFLED SLUG...HUNTING IS TURNING INTO KILLING NOT "HUNTING" TRY USING SIGHTS, ITLL GIVE U SOME MORE PRIDE IN UR KILL

ALL THIS TECHNOLOGY.....THATS NOT HUNTING!
