Guest Blog: VA Father-Son Team Scores Big Buck

Mike: I wanted to share a memorable hunt for my Dad, and especially for me. Dad is my hero, best friend, and he is the reason I hunt in the first place. He turned 53 this year and celebrated his 30th wedding anniversary. I am blessed to have amazing parents (and for my mom to put up with us). Now onto the hunt from last November.

It was the second Saturday of muzzleloader season here in Loudoun Co, VA. We were hunting a farm we have managed for 10 years, and we are finally seeing the results. We had been hunting a big buck dubbed "Sling Shot" all season. Three days earlier I had a close encounter with heavy-racked deer we had never seen before, but I was not able to close the deal.

Around 10 a.m. Dad saw a buck, quickly realized it was a shooter and took the shot. He called me, and I headed over to help look for it. Blood was very sparse early on, and the buck ran a ways and piled into a tall, thick cornfield. We searched awhile, but the sun was warming things up and there was little sign. We were feeling pretty down.

Then, to make matters worse, we heard the combine fire up—unbelievably, the farmer began cutting the field, on this day of all days! We called a friend to help us track, and we hurriedly began looking again. Buried in a thick row of corn, my dad yells," Jumped the buck!" He bolted and crossed a road; panic set in. We followed and found that, thankfully, he appeared to still be on the property.

It was a tough decision, but we decided to back out and come back after lunch. We had been on the trail a short time when we saw a white belly in the weeds--there was Dad’s biggest buck to date! We ran to the deer and after many hugs, high fives and pictures we soaked up the moment. He ended up scoring 142 5/8, but who cares about score? It was a roller coaster ride of emotions, a hunt with my dad I will never forget.

If you take anything from this story, it is to never give up, we owe it to the animal to make every effort and then some to recover it. And we are truly blessed to share these moments in the woods with our family and friends. Most of you here on BIG DEER are like family to me.---Thanks for reading, Grant Skidmore

Grant's Gravatar Mike, I wanted to thank you for posting this story, it means alot to me. Especially today when I am going to closing on my house, and after wed, when I spent 5 hours in the ER with my dad from his fall. *Be careful with heights guys, he has 14 staples in his head now*. And after some serious thinking and talking to Curt and Kahuna and Scott, I have decided to remain a big part of the blog and realize that a minor disagreement isnt worth leaving a site that I am so passionate about. So I want to take this time to also issue a full apology to Derbie if there are any sour feelings between us. The results of this past week have really humbled me so to speak, and you guys are my extended family.

Silverback's Gravatar Grant, Great story. Glad to see you still participate in the Big Deer Blog. We all can't have the same opinion on everything or there would be not need for any blog. We are all big boys that love to hunt, no matter how you do it and what you passionate about. I am SURE no one losses sleep over a comment from another blogger and if they do, well, get a grip, we are having fun, sharing "OUR" knowlege and getting jacked up on hunting. Just remember, a family that hunts together, stays together. (as long as they don't jump in your stand : ) )

Russ's Gravatar Great story Grant and I am glad that you are back on the blog. I have had some differince of opinion with another blogger as well and I also agree with him on many things, but we have to stick together as hunters. There are too many people that want to shut us all down.

Jerad's Gravatar Wow, nice story Grant, nothing like the thrill of the hunt and the ups and downs of not knowing if the deer got away. Nice job and nice
buck, good luck to you and your father in future hunts and with everything. Times are rough, but you gotta push on man. I feel ya though.

DougInWisconsin's Gravatar Grant, that is a great story. Hope your Dad is doing well.

Glad to see you're sticking around. I missed the brouhaha but I know personally how easy it is to get worked up about something we all love so much. None of would keep coming back if we didn't feel so strongly about hunting and the community here that Mike helped to create.

Have a good weekend brother!

Buddy in South Central Va's Gravatar Great Story there Grant! Those are memories being made that will stay with you for a lifetime. Glad to say that I have the same relationship with my dad. I can still remember the first tim he took me hunting 43 years ago when I was only 5 and can still discibe the feel of his hands on my back as he pinned a red bandana to the back of my hunting jacket and letting me cary his rifle out to the truck. as we were taking off for my very first hunting adventure. I can remember it like it was only yesterday! Welcome back brother!

ChadMS's Gravatar Grant, Thanks for the post. Your story makes me knot up and thrills me at the same time. You see, my dad passed away 8 years ago, and I wish I could have just one more hunt with him. We were super close, and he is missed. What makes me proud of you is that fact that you are obviosly cherishing these moments with your father. Many folks run off to find better land, buddies, whatever, and miss perhaps the best time with special people. Best wishes to you both, and what a great deer to share it over.
