Giant Ontario Bow Buck: 171 1/8 Net!
Hey Mike: Remember your “Second Shot at a Monster” TV segment you did on my 2006 buck? (See video here.) I wanted to let you know I’m a decent archer--I only needed one shot at this giant! It was the evening of Oct. 27, 2009. I was sitting in my climber in the same tree I shot my 06 buck out of. I first saw him at 50 yards, checking a doe. I was using dominant buck urine as an attractant, and I grunted at him a couple times. He decided to check me out. He came in hard with his nose on the ground, until I gave him a mouth call and stopped him at less than 20 yards. I settled the pin on him and touched off the release. I watched my arrow tipped with a 3-blade Rage bury into his shoulder as he spun away. A perfect heart shot was the result. I remained surprisingly calm until after the shot, then I came unglued when I heard him fall in the fading light. I don't need to tell you what it feels like when you’ve just shot a monster! After my 2006 success I tried to prepare myself for possibly never seeing another giant, let alone shooting one, because I only bowhunt, and I limit myself to hunting the same two farms here in Ontario. Well, I guess “never” came pretty quick. He was a main-frame 10-pointer with 3 kickers; officially scored 176 6/8 gross non-typical and 171 1/8 NT. Typical frame grossed 169 3/8. He field-dressed a healthy 245 lbs. Love your blog. I crave pics and stories of guys shooting giants. Keep up the good work and good luck getting your dropper. Thanks, Shane Good Awesome Shane on 2 bow bucks of a lifetime--from the same tree, great job man! BTW, focus on this line from Shane’s story: I was using dominant buck urine as an attractant. The late pre-rut when old bucks prowl hard for does is the time to try that. I’ve written and recommended many times to use buck lure in late October/early November before the peak, but not enough hunters do it. Shane did, and he helped him kill another monster. Try it! comment
I had a similar experience. In 2006 I KILLED a 158 6/8 on Nov. 15th with my shotgun. On Nov. 15th 2008 I killed a 160 5/8" out of the same stand, my 2 best bucks to date. Amazingly I missed a mid 130 class 8 pt from the same stand on Nov. 2, 2007 which would have been my best archery buck.
It's true, there are just some trees in the woods that are THE place to be!
I incorporate this same Buck In Rut urine in all of my decoy set ups as well. It really helps seal the deal in a decoy set up as well.
