2-Inch Toy Gun Lands NY Boy in Principal's Office

From this article at nydailynews.com:

An irate Staten Island mom blasted a grade school principal Wednesday for treating her son like a pint-sized Plaxico Burress after he brought a 2-inch-long toy gun to school.

"This principal is a bully and a coward, and needs to be held accountable," said Laura Timoney, 44, after her teary fourth-grader was nearly suspended for playing with the tiny toy at lunch.

"The school should be embarrassed. This is a common-sense issue."

Patrick was hauled into the principal's office, scolded and apparently had to sign some kind of conduct statement. Say what?

Patrick, whose dad is a former NY police officer, was allowed to stay in school, but that didn’t make things better for Ms. Laura. "I was in disbelief," the still-fuming mother said. "Why didn't anyone step up with an ounce of common sense and put an end to the harassment of my child?"

My Lord, what is this politically correct, zero-tolerance society coming to? comment

That's Rediculous, but I'm really not that surprised. There are a lot of idiots out there.

2"? Seriously? For reference, that is shorter than a tube of chapstick.

I'm a teacher, so I guess I might have a different take on this. This transcends political correctness, and even the issue of the 2nd Amendment in my opinion. All of this changed as a result of Columbine.
Schools have changed, as a result of our society having changed. School shootings, and parents who don't hold their kids accountable any longer have made it even worse.
Now, don't get me wrong, it's a TOY gun. If they'd have simply called him in and explained to him why it isn't appropriate today, that could've and should've sufficed. I agree that things were taken a bit far. Mom was right, common sense should've been utilized.

Zero tolerance and PC is killing this country. Why do we not have zero tolerance for muslims who cause problems on airplanes or for the black panthers standing in front of voting booths? I cant wait until my kid is old enough to go to school, he will be getting called into the office and I will be meeting the principal, because he will be wearing second amendment t shirts and any gun t shirt I can find that fits him. There is but one thing that keeps us free and it is our right to keep and bear arms. Every gun law is unconstitutional and there are enough of them on the books, so next time elroy gets pinched for the stolen pistol, do not let him plea out of it and the next time some muslim acts up on a plane, choke him out, but leave the kids alone and let them be boys!

I agree, common sense should have prevailed. But as a former school board member I have some experience with this and on behalf of the principal let me add this tid bit. Today's society has made a kinds of changes to the way we have to think and prepare. The school can only come up with policies that can be used to enforce discipline, so it has been handed over to lawyer's, (enough said) and this school may of had a policy that read no guns allowed at school, even toy guns. Refering to toys that perfectly imitate real guns. Because of the wording in the policy the principal has to follow a process or the lawyers will get involved, here comes the common sense part, and the school board will be looking for him to use it.

I truly believe that this country is going to hell in a handbasket. From idiotic PC crap like a 2" gun, to the swindlers, greedy-guts, and crooks in Washington, to our goofy govenor here in Texas, things just don't seem to be the same. I may disagree with some of y'all's politics but I'm a By God American and when I hear stuff like this it just burns me up.

As has been said many times lately, "Common sense is not common anymore". A sad state we are often delt.

Pappa necbone hit the nail on the head. The lawyers are running everything in this country now....politics, business, schools, medicine....
everyone has "lawyered up" to the point that nothing gets down.

It's out of hand, IMHO.
