Huge Ohio 8-Point Buck (172 6/8 gross)

Mike: Just wanted to send you this pic of my 8-point buck I harvested on Nov. 7th 2009 in Ohio (Preble County). Rattled, grunted and hit the can, and it wasn’t 3 minutes until he was standing broadside in front of me 10 yards away. I was hunting on the ground behind a big white oak. He had no idea I was there. Anyway, thought you would like it. Gross score, 172 6/8; final score, 165 3/8.--A.J. Marker, “The Bone Collector”

A few thoughts:

2009 was the year of the giant 8-pointer in many places, gotta love those big 8s man…like I’ve told ya many, many times on the blog and on TV and in magazines, the rut days of Nov. 7 to 11 are the BEST no matter moon phase or temperature, so start planning your 2010 vacation now…call hard during the peak rut days (too many hunters are too timid with it)...if you rattle/grunt/bleat up a huge buck like this it will make your hunting career …way to go A.J, awesome! comment

Curt's Gravatar Nice to see people are still culling the small bucks and not afraid to share them with the world! Damn, what an 8 pointer.

Levi Banks's Gravatar I love hunting from the ground, doesn't sound like he was using a blind either. If you're careful I've had deer walk 10-20 yards right past
me, just sitting on the ground, you can't beat it for manuverability in case of wind or other factors. I might miss a few chances, but you
can walk in and find a great spot and be hunting in a few minutes, maybe a little trimming. Anybody else try it, got any tips?

hanback's Gravatar levi u are right, i just wrote a mag story about a buck I killed on the ground at 17 yards a few yrs ago; i set up near a ditch and
just stood behind a big tree. when the bucks (2 of them) walked into the ditch and disappeared, i stepped out from behind the tree,
drew bow and waited. the big 8 in the lead stepped up and out and i smoked him--he never knew i was there! no blind, no nothing,
fun man; to the contrary a big blind will spook more deer than you imagine

Dean Weimer's Gravatar Great Eight! I hunted more from the ground this season than any season to date. I still don't do it with a bow too much though. Sounds like a neat expierence though.

Lance's Gravatar Great Deer, amazing mass. I like to setup on the top of a hill looking down into the draw with my bow. We have to great ground setups for bow on the family farm doing this. I also have had good luck sitting infront of round bails on a square bail in dark brown (carhart) or green cloths.

Scott from MI's Gravatar Huge 8pt! Congrats on that hoss. Im going to be doing some hunting in Ohio this year for the first time....looking forward to
it. Big Deer counrty! When i first started bow hunting i used to hunt off the ground all the time. Taken a couple deer that
way. Always a good option if you have a great spot but no good trees.
