Texas: Black Whitetail Buck!

Eddie Stevenson sent me this:

Mike, I shot this melanistic buck yesterday afternoon. What a rare occurrence to see one of these deer! I saw my first “black” whitetail deer about 25 years ago in North Carolina. I was just a kid and I don’t think my dad believed me when I told him what I had seen.  I know he’s a young buck, but this deer was on a small tract of land and I’m quite certain that he would not survive to full maturity.  The buck came in chasing does and I had about ten seconds to make the decision to shoot.  Regardless of size, he is indeed a “trophy” in my book and already has a place on the wall.--Eddie from TX

Eddie asked if I would have shot the young black buck. I told him, "Heck yeah!" What a once in a lifetime trophy! What would you have done? Have you ever seen a black deer? I never have. comment

Matt Elder's Gravatar Cool buck Eddie, I definetely would have shot that deer. I've never seen a black deer and this is the first time that I've heard of one being shot. That has got to be extremely rare. Great Job.

T.J. from Louisiana's Gravatar My uncle saw an all black doe at 20 yards about a month ago. Doe was in some thick stuff, so he never got a shot. Hunting in south
Louisiana, talk about rare!

T.J. from Louisiana's Gravatar My dad also shot an all black coyote a few years ago, got it shoulder mounted on a pedistle, and the taxidermist won nationals with the
mount. Hunting on the same lease in southern louisiana, two mellanistic animals on the same lease in 3 years, can't get much rarer than
that!

dbaxter's Gravatar I saw a black doe about seven years ago while bowhunting. She was with another doe in an open field about
60 yds away and she was black!. I tried unsuccessfully to stalk within bow range. Never saw her again.
