Open Thread Weekend #8: Kill Your Buck Yet?

How is your hunting going, how is the rut in your part of the world, are the bucks locked down and breeding the does, or are they still moving hard? How much you gonna get out Thanksgiving week? Send me your stories and pictures, and/or post them in your region of the BIG DEER Rut Report, some cool stuff in there, check it out.

Good luck everybody, still a long way to go in this season, keep your spirits up even if you haven’t shot a deer yet.

Gun deer season opens in Wisconsin tomorrow morning. Gonna be a little chilly. This morning was -3 with wind chill. Supposed to be about the same tomorrow morning. I've been finally seeing some deer moving this week. Very encouraging. Seems like the rut might be going strong up here finally. Our corn was cut last night. Should be a good morning with the fresh-cut fields and cold weather getting the deer on their feet. About 100 less acres for them to hide now. What do you all think?

Good luck to all the Wisconsin boys. Be safe.

good luck doug and all from way up here in cold, snowy canada!

Doug, sounds like you are in an ideal situation. I expect to see your mug behind some antlers SOON. I had an encounter with a great 8 point the other night. I was on the ground hunting a corn field that is half picked. They were runnin the edge of the corn which was only 36 yards from me. I had this 8 point come right in front of me at 8 yards so i waited to draw until he went past me. Stopped at what I thought was right at 20 yards at let it fly. I hit him low and found my arrow and all I hit was a bunch of fat down low :(. Oh, well. I know it wasn't a fatal hit but I just don't know how I screwed up a perfect situation.

Hey Jordan, that's too bad. Happens though. You'll get another crack.

I hope you're right. Gotta shoot that doe first though;)

Thanks Mike! Send some of that snow down this way. That's all we're missing.

Good luck Doud and all the Wisconsin hunters, weather sounds great for ya. I was finally able to connect on a good 8pt on Mon.
the third day of our gun season. My wife took her first buck on opening day Sat. It was a good couple of days for us, cold weather
and snow! Good luck, be safe.

Yeah, good luck, Doug, from sunny, warm Houston! BTW, that's a hell of a buck, Hanback. He's a real wooly booger all right.

Good luck to ya Doug and all you other gun hunters this weekend in the frozen tundra! I agree that the movement is picking up, to bad I gotta put the bow away :-( My wife is gonna sit with me and we're gonna try to get her first deer. She passed her hunter safety and is now looking forward to tomorrow. Say a little prayer for us and Good luck to all and be safe!

Cold weather all week in Michigan, in the 20's. Planning on hunting this weekend. main rut is going. not seeing enough older bucks yet. Keeping the faith-anybody out there fighting "treestand burnout ? All these days in the stand waiting for mr. Big taking it's toll. I'M STAYING IN THE GAME NO MATTER WHAT-Just somewhat tired. No other family to hunt with but me. They think I'm nuts to get up at 4:00 AM and do what I do..

Some older more mature does were seen. A second    shot was fired   at a doe but no hit was confirmed. After shots deer headed east    toward green field section of property.

Deer aren't real...

Trent, sounds like you had a tough weekend from what you wrote. Been there, buddy.
Saturday, I didn't see anything, running my no deer sighted/encountered tally to about 3 1/2 weeks. I was pretty dejected. It was pretty cold (5 degrees Sat. morning).
Sunday, it was a little wamrer (about 11 degrees). Shot a nice fat 3 1/2 year old doe at about 9:20am. Shot her out of a bow stand I hadn't hunted all season at about 15 yards. Yikes! .270WSM did a bit of a number on her shoulder. Sunday evening was warm. About 41 degrees. Had a great encounter with a shooter 10 pointer at 4:15pm. That buck closed to about 5 yards on the other side of the pine tree I was hunkered against. He didn't know I was there but knew something was up and turned around and trotted away with a large bodied buck that was all broken up. Very cool way to end a nice hunting day.

Slowest Gun sesason i have ever seen in central Illinois........
didn't hear very many shots at all.......

My worst opener in a while. Sat saw and my wife passed on 4 fawns and sunday we saw 4 deer again and she was blessed with her first deer a 1.5 doe! That 1.5 doe has as much meaning and pride in as my biggest buck!

Awesome, Jake! Congrats on your wife.

Here in S. Ar we've had a bang up season. I watched a 2 1/2 year old chase doe's for
an hour yesterday evening. My freezer is full. Everybody except me has killed
one worthy of hangin on the wall. I got one tag left. Hope the rut pick's up for you guy's

Opener of second shotgun season here in southern MN last Sat.
AM: Saw two does and a nice buck after my buddy had shot at him twice (missed).
PM: Shot a small doe at about two and was back in the stand by three. Saw two more does.
Sunday:
Didn't hunt the AM
PM: Saw three does but was buck hunting now.

Overall a pretty good weekend. I will probably get out Friday and Saturday this week and then call it a year.

i finally saw the buck that i have been getting pictures of all summer, (11 pt. 130-140) and i put him on the ground last nite. found him this morning. i have spent a LOT of hours in a tree this year, and that is only the second shootable buck i have seen. every pic. of this buck has been a nite time shot untill i got one of him friday, at 11:00 in the morning. that is always a good sign! i had a descent 10 pt. the last day of bow, at 15 yards, but in the middle of a thicket. that worked out though, because this is the buck i really wanted.

That's awesome, Don!!! Your hard work and patience paid off, borther! Do you have pics of him?
# Posted By Doug In Wisconsin | 11/26/08 6:49 AM
